What is "Chiropractic" and How Does It Help The Body?
To Understand this, a person must first understand his or her own bodies. This is a brief overview of the nervous system, an explanation of pain and it's function and chiropractors role in your health.
The brain is the central control of the whole body, however, "the brain" isn't just the part that is contained within the skull. It also has a tail, the spinal cord.
The spinal cord helps control the whole body. This includes your ability to use your muscles and use your sense of touch. It also includes the body's ability to maintain itself; keep you breathing properly, keep the heart beating properly, controls the flow of blood through the blood vessels, controls proper digestion and controls the body's immune system. You are now beginning to see the utmost importance of good spinal health.
The spine and it's 24 movable bones called vertebrae protects the delicate spinal cord, while allowing for a full range of motion of the body. Between each vertebra are not just one but several joints. When a vertebral joint is not moving properly this disturbs the nervous system and this is called a subluxation. This can result in other joints having to move excessively to pick up the slack and usually resulting in some form of pain.
When a body finally gets to the point of pain, it is now that the problem is so bad that it can no longer be ignored. Pain often makes sure that you don't make the problem worse. This is an important function in the body's ability to maintain and heal itself. If you take medication to cover up the pain, you are taking away that function.
Many people ignore their problem even when they cannot determine the cause of the pain. When actually their problem could be from an old injury; such as a car accident months or even years before, a fall on the icy sidewalk or even bad posture while sitting at the TV or computer.
Doctors of Chiropractic are specifically trained to correct subluxations and restore spinal balance through a process known as the chiropractic adjustment. The question often arises, "why, once I am adjusted, do I have to keep getting adjusted?"
There are 2 reasons for this:
1) Everyone's injury is different and may take more adjustments to correct and...
2) Maintenance, just as your teeth and even your car needs scheduled regular maintenance, so does your spine after the mobility and balance has been restored. It makes good sense to keep the spine maintained and not allow it to degenerate to the point of being painful.
